We hate to play favorites…but this guy is pretty fantastic! A 1995 Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Recipient and TC Williams graduate, Dr. Hutchings recently returned “home” as Superintendent of the Alexandria City Public School System. We are recognizing Dr. Hutchings as Scholar of the Month because he embodies the hard work and success that SFA aims to help foster in all ACPS students and its scholarship recipients.
“I am a scholarship recipient and it changed the trajectory of my life. I want to tell our young people that you can grow up to become the superintendent of the school where you got your start. I am so grateful for the start that the Scholarship Fund gave me,” Dr. Hutchings said while speaking at the 2018 SFA Spring Black-Tie Gala.
Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr., 1995 SFA Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Scholarship Recipient , was celebrated here as a 2004 SFA Portrait of Success during our annual Spring Black-Tie Gala.
Thanks to a scholarship from the SFA, Dr. Hutchings graduated from Old Dominion University. He went on to receive his Masters of Education at George Mason University and received a scholarship from The College of William & Mary where he completed his Ed.D. in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership.
ACPS welcomed Dr. Hutchings back in June of 2018 as its Superintendent of Schools.
“I’m delighted to be back in my hometown with my wife and our two children, who are now ACPS students,” said Dr. Hutchings. “Over the past few weeks, I’ve spent time visiting our schools and meeting with principals to ensure our schools are ready for a strong start to the school year. I’ve spent time with students and families to hear first-hand about their vision for the future and what they need from ACPS to help them get there.”
The Scholarship Fund is excited to have Dr. Hutchings back at home at the helm as head of ACPS. Dr. Hutchings has lauded the work of the Fund and knows firsthand how the scholarships we award really do change students’ lives…forever.
“We are really thrilled to have one of our own recipients return to give back to the Alexandria community in such a meaningful way,” said Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Executive Director Beth Lovain. “We are especially excited to work in partnership with Dr. Hutchings to grow the Fund to ensure that every Alexandria student with financial need has the opportunity to make their college dreams a reality.”
