Scholarship Fund of Alexandria Celebrates the Life and Mourns the Passing
of Leading Advocate and Former Board Chair Claudia Waller
ALEXANDRIA, VA — The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) joins the Alexandria community in mourning the loss of leading advocate and 33-year supporter of SFA scholarships Claudia Waller.
“Claudia Waller was a staunch supporter and a true believer in the need to provide college access and opportunity to all Alexandria students,” said Priscilla Goodwin, Chair of the SFA Board of Trustees.“We are tremendously grateful for her support over the years, and especially so during the SFA’s nascent years,” Goodwin added.
Claudia Waller served on the SFA Board of Trustees and as Board Chair. She and her husband John established the Michael D. Waller Memorial Scholarship in honor of their late son. Each year SFA awards two Michael D. Waller college scholarships to T.C. Williams High School graduates.
“Claudia was known for her extraordinary commitment to our students and her dedication to supporting our services and our scholarships,” said Beth Lovain, SFA Executive Director. “But more than that she was known for her warm smile and generous and kind spirit. She will be missed by us all,” added Lovain.
The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria was founded in 1986 to raise funds to support college advising and scholarships for students with financial need in the Alexandria City Public Schools. Over the past 35 years, the Scholarship Fund has awarded more than $16.5 million in scholarships and helped send 5,000 local students to college. The vast majority of SFA scholarships are awarded to students of color; more than half of all recipients are the first generation in their family to attend college. Each year the Scholarship Fund awards more than $1 million in scholarships and direct service college advising and support to provide greater college access and opportunity for all students in Alexandria. SFA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For more information go to www.AlexScholarshipFund.org.
