Scholarship Money To Honor Del Ray Dad Phil Savarie
October 15, 2023. A lively crowd gathered for the Del Ray Dad’s Pig Roast, a fundraiser for the Del Ray Dad’s Scholarship honoring Phil Savarie in whose name the scholarship will be given this year. “I’m proud of the community spirit of Del Ray. The DRDs are just a small part of what makes our neighborhood special,” commented Michael Wilker, one of the group’s founders. Approximately 250 guests partied until just about 10pm raising $4,400.00. Tables groaning with potluck offerings, the pig roasted to perfection, blazing fire pits, live music by Morgan and the Missed Opportunity, and plenty of square yardage—encompassing four backyards—allowed friends and neighbors to join together for the benefit of a deserving 2024 Titan who will receive the Del Ray Dad’s Scholarship this May.
Our particular thanks to those attending, donating, and also helping, to make the event memorable including:
Hosts: Gordon Johnston, Karen Helbrect, Fred Wixso, and Brian Kathman. Smokers: (beginning bright-eyed and early at 6am) Tom Bowman, Tony DiMartino, Brian Kathman and Michael Wilker. Other Credit: Bill Blackburn for the loan of the smoker, sale of the pig and a ready supply of sides; Jenn Walker for her assistance with beer from Port City; and many others who helped in ways large and small—but never trivial… donating tarps to keep the ground from getting soggy on Saturday; dropping off tables; donating hot dogs, buns, sides and desserts; and people giving their time to set up and clean up.
The October event was a great time for families and friends to have the chance to be together for a cause that extends well beyond the boundaries of Del Ray. The spirit of the Del Ray Dad’s roast reflects the abundance of generosity, love of fun and caring for neighbors that energizes the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria staff and award recipients. Alexandria City is full of good people doing good things.
